The Miracle Worker (Cert PG)

Young Helen Keller who had lost the ability to see, hear or speak in infancy, is in danger of being sent to an institution. Her inability to communicate has left her frustrated and violent. In desperation, her parents seek help from the Perkins Institute, which sends them a “visually impaired Yankee schoolgirl” named Annie Sullivan to tutor their daughter. Through persistence and love, and sheer stubbornness, Annie breaks through Helen’s walls of silence and darkness and teaches her to communicate.

This wonderful tear-jerking & eventually heartwarming compelling true story of the early (the breakthrough) years of Helen Keller and her teacher Annie Sullivan who stubbornly helps the belligerent violent child to overcome the frustration due to her handicaps and learned to communicate (e.g. through sign language) is an essential biographical drama which earned Academy Awards for both Anne Bancroft (Best Actress Oscar on her first nomination) as Annie and Patty Duke (Best Supporting Actress)  Classic Film Guide.
