Joan Tsalikis takes over as President of Inner Wheel

There's plenty to keep members of Hazel Grove Inner Wheel on their toes with the varied programme drawn up by this year's dynamic president, Joan Tsalikis. Much of her own life has been devoted to helping people in need.

Born in Bramahll, she trained as a primary school teacher in Exmouth, landed her first job in Bristol - and then wanderlust took over.

She travelled and worked all over Europe before reaching Greece where she met a young accountancy student at Athens University called Ari. They returned to Britain to marry.

Joan spent several years teaching dyslexic children, fuelling her desire to help all children experiencing learning difficulties.

Today, one of her main interests is Beacon, a local counselling charity of which she is a trustee and which is now extending its activities into exciting new areas.

She says of Inner Wheel: "It's a wonderful forum for friendship and has a unique way to connect with local needs in its own way and in helping other local charities. I also admire Inner Wheel and Rotary's international links, providing a dependable and reliable group in countries where corruption is widespread."

For several years she and fellow members of Hazel Grove club have been raising funds and sending gifts of toilet products and food to "the lovely members of the Inner Wheel Club of Harare who, despite their own immense problems, still support residents of local old people's homes, prisoners and orphans."
