Hazel Grove Rotary Celebrates its 52nd Birthday

On Thursday 17th February the club celebrated the anniversary of its charter. The charter was presented to the club in February 1959, at a ceremony held in the Five Ways hotel in Hazel Grove.

Since that time the club has continued to serve the community. For 52 years men and women have been inspired by the ideals of 'service before self' and have enjoyed the fellowship of other club members.

Past charters have been formal occasions but this year the club broke with tradition to enjoy an informal evening at the Deanwater Hotel in Woodford. Club President John Miller took on the role of auctioneer in order to raise money to pay for a new club website. During the evening club members shared a birthday cake and looked through club archives to see photographs of the late 1950's.

In the early years of the club, social events were held at the Embassy Rooms in Sale and were glittering, formal evenings, with black ties and evening gowns. Memories of past Presidents' evenings and contacts with club in USA were recalled with fondness.

Today the club is looking forward to a planned visit to Ireland in June when we will be joined by Rotarians from our twin club in Belgrade.

Last night's celebration included the reading of a letter of thanks to club members for their support for a new water filter project in Kenya. International links and friendships remain an important part of Rotary International as do contacts with the local community.

We are looking forward to the blossoming of purple crocus in Torkington Park when the late spring sunshine permits. Club members very much enjoyed their party celebration together.
